Help with HearthBuilders on Windows PC, PC VR and Meta Quest
Write to contact@compass-software.ro. We read every message. To help us help you, please tell us:
- where you play: Windows PC, PC VR (and which headset), or Meta Quest (and which model);
- what happened, and what you were doing just before;
- whether it happens every time, and a picture of the screen if you can.
Getting started
On the title screen, choose Play, then New World. A world made "with Pip's help" starts the story: Pip shows the way, and every line is spoken. You can turn the story off and just build.
Each player has a profile. Playing as: … on the title screen switches between them. A child's profile starts with gentle limits, which a grown-up can change in Parents.

On a PC, every key can be changed in Settings → Controls. A game controller works too, and the buttons shown on screen follow whatever you're using.

Comfort in VR
- Settings → Controls has the VR options: Turning (smooth, or in steps of 30, 45 or 60 degrees), Comfort edges (darkened edges while moving, on PC VR) and Aim line (a faint line showing where your hand points).
- If the view feels too high or off to one side, choose Recenter view in the menu.
- Take a break every 30 minutes or so, and stop at once if you feel unwell. Keep your play area clear, and follow your headset maker's age and safety guidance.
Playing together at home
- Everyone needs the game and must be on the same home network (the same Wi-Fi or router). Up to four players can play together.
- The player whose world it is opens the menu and chooses Invite friends.
- Each friend chooses Join a Friend on the title screen and picks the world from the list.
- If the host has to let friends in, a Let In button appears in the host's menu.
Nothing goes over the internet. On a Windows PC, the first time you invite friends Windows may ask whether HearthBuilders may use the network: allow it on private networks. A world doesn't appear in the list? Check that both devices are on the same network, and that playing with friends hasn't been turned off for that profile in Parents.
For parents
- Parents on the title screen opens the settings for each profile: difficulty, monsters, fire, playing with friends, chat and its rude-word filter, and more.
- You can protect these settings with a PIN of 4 to 8 digits.
- Forgotten the PIN? Write to us at contact@compass-software.ro and we'll help you reset it.
- The game never goes online and collects no personal information. See the privacy policy.
Common questions
Where are my worlds saved?
On the device you play on. The game saves by itself every couple of minutes, and when you choose Save & quit. Uninstalling the game removes its worlds, so on a PC copy the game's "Saved" folder first if you want to keep them.
The game won't start on my Meta Quest
The Quest asks for a controller before it starts the game. Pick up a controller and press a button to wake it, then start HearthBuilders again.
The picture is too dark or too bright
Change Brightness in Settings → Graphics. Deep caves are meant to be dark: bring a torch or a lantern.
The game feels slow on my computer
In Settings → Graphics, lower the View distance, or set Grass and flowers to Most or Half.
How do I change the language?
Settings → Language. The game is in English and Romanian, and everything changes at once: menus, items, the story and Pip's voice.
